Football news... 'end of an era'

26th May 2017

The Sunnylands football team qualified for the small schools (175 pupils or less) Northern Ireland finals for a second year in a row. The finals took place in Antrim on Friday 26th of May.

On a beautiful day for football (indeed a beautiful day for anything outdoors!), the team performed admirably by reaching the semi-finals before losing to the eventual winners, 3-1. Considering the best teams from around the country attend this tournament, it was a tremendous achievement. All the boys and girl (well done Sophie), performed with aplomb in searing heat.

On a personal note, I would like to mention three boys in particular - Justin Waite, Kyle Moore and Adam Thompson. I have had tremendous pleasure watching these 3 boys represent the school since P4. They were all instrumental in the success we enjoyed last year as a football team (we won THREE trophies in case someone missed all the posters I had around the school :-) ), and it has been my wonderful privilege to teach and coach them during this time. To watch them mature both on and off the field, fills me with tremendous pride. They have been a credit to the school and themselves. A special mention should also go to the parents of the boys as they have supported us through thick and thin! Thank you all for your lifts and support. They will be sorely missed by the team, but I wish them all continued success as they move on to their new schools in June.

Yes it is the end of an era, but the opportunity now arises for the boys and girls coming through the school to fill the void. A wee birdie tells me the lower end of the school are producing footballers to 'fill big boots'... I hope they are right!
