Farewell Mr Hamilton, and the opening of the Jackson Turner outdoor classroom.

29th Jun 2017

As most people who work in primary schools will attest to, June is a very busy month. However, this June we have been extremely busy in Sunnylands Primary School. Everyone associated with the school is now aware that Mr Hamilton is leaving us for pastures new. Mr Hamilton will be sorely missed by staff, pupils and parents alike. Testament to this was the special assembly the school held to recognise all the wonderful work he has achieved in his 5 plus years at the school. A very special send-off included a song from the choir in which Mr Hamilton was ‘actively involved’, a pupil question time and a whole school rendition of a song specially prepared by Mrs Porter. The song was sung in conjunction with some ‘dodgy’ pictures of Mr Hamilton’s time at the school!

The school also held a special assembly to mark the opening of an outdoor area in memory of Jackson Turner. Jackson’s family were in attendance for the opening and a special ribbon was cut by Ally, Jackson’s sister, to declare the area officially open. At this assembly there were also some special awards given out. Rihanna Garston was awarded a trophy for outstanding contribution to Irish Dancing by Miss Dines. A cup, in memory of Jackson, was also presented to a child who is seen as someone who represents the school with aplomb, in KS1. This was a very close run thing but in the end it came down to two girls: Tia Smyth and Chloe Drysdale. It was a very tough decision but ultimately there could only be one winner and Chloe was awarded the cup with Tia receiving a certificate and voucher. Congratulations to both girls as they really are great ambassadors for our school.

So that is almost it for this academic year. As a long hot summer approaches (fingers crossed) and the teachers head off to sleep for 2 weeks solidly, we have much to celebrate and reflect on. September will bring change for everyone and, as a wise man once said, ‘The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new’… Enjoy your summer!
